hello pauline,yes they have to buy there own t.v. and they have no speakers they have to buy head phones also ,so when there released the t.v. is not worth a dam to them they give it to someone or the prisons re sells it i know they can rent them also the prison my son is at . hope this helps your new friend, joyce
