HOW I USE PrisonerLife.com TO HELP ME SUCCEED

Michael Santos
Friends of mine built my personal website in 1996. Since then, I've used the services of PrisonerLife.com to help me meet new people and open new opportunities. My website has brought meaning to my life and helped me participate in the world beyond prison fences. Today the site provides a forum where I can express ideas, and where internet users can navigate through the various sections of my site to see the progress I've made during my fourteen years of incarceration. My personal website helps me show the steps I take to prepare myself for release.

PrisonerLife.com exposes me to the hundred million people who use the internet everyday. It is like having one's own magazine. It has helped me develop relationships that have enriched my life in many ways. The site also has opened opportunities. Currently I am writing a book for a major publishing house. Without my website, this incredible opportunity would not have been available to me. Besides the book, my website helped me persuade several universities to overlook my incarceration and allow me to participate in graduate programs. I also use my site to work directly with professors who help students understand the substantial subculture living behind America's prison fences.

As a long-term prisoner, halfway through a forty-five year sentence, it is very important for me to communicate with the world. My website and e-mail account has helped me, especially since my access to the telephone is so restricted. People leave messages for me at my e-mail forwarding account. When I call my family members, they relate to me all of the new people who have expressed an interest in communicating with me.

Under the BIOGRAPHY link on my personal website at PrisonerLife.com, I feature a brief introduction about myself. As a long-term prisoner, my main objective is to obtain a strong network of support that can help my efforts to earn freedom. I use my network of support to open doors for me and intervene when I encounter problems.

Under the MY CASE link, I feature a description of my offense and the steps I take to redeem myself. I also invite internet users into my life and ask them to support my efforts. Under my RESUME link I feature the qualifications I've developed since my incarceration began and describe my contributions to society. Other prisoners use this link to brag about their accomplishments in and out of prison. In my OTHER link I feature essays and articles. I write about the prison system and the people it holds. I also write open letters to internet users requesting their support. You may want to use this link to feature your poems, essays, artwork, etc. Use it for anything you want. In my LETTERS link I feature the letters I've received of people who support my efforts to earn freedom. Other inmates use this section to feature letters from family, friends, people in the community, and anyone who offers support.

This is my way of participating with the world. The services of PrisonerLife.com remove me from prison. If I did not pursue activities to reach out, my human interactions would be limited to the relationships I develop behind these fences. Communicating with leaders of the community, however, is far more conductive to my efforts to succeed.
