A Letter From
A Death Row Inmate's Sister

THERESA ROSILLO
02/22/2002

It is inhumane and cruel what the states do to their own citizens.

I have wanted to write for sometime now about I how feel and I had to get some courage together in order to finally write it down and send it out there for whoever on this crazy but essential thing they call the internet to hear my pleas for help.

It concerns my feelings about capitol punishment and death row. I think it is a sickening way of revenge, unnecessarily used and abused in the most sad and frightening way. It is inhumane and cruel what the states do to their own citizens. How are you going to say that it is not right to kill and then say that we're going to show you by killing you too. Then you have made yet many, many more people suffer the lose of a loved one and you, yourself have assisted in killing yet another human being. And you know what; sometimes it ends up being a severely mentally ill person, one who was a minor (a child) at the time of the crime, or even worse, an innocent man (or woman) who is awaiting a horrible death but first has to await his wrongful sentence, being treated less than an animal awaiting to be put to sleep. I personally have seen animals put to sleep and it isn't as such a painful and cruel way to die as these men do. If you must be put to sleep before your time then it should be more of a peaceful death. We have no right trying to do the Lords job. Hasn't there been enough pain, loss and sadness?

I guess I better explain before I go any further. I have a brother on Texas Death Row who has a valid claim of innocence and I've also became close to a few others there at the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas. So of course, I quickly learned of the outrageous and cruel conditions about that place first and I surely keep up more intensely with their conditions. But I've have a lot of time to learn about other places too since Paul has been there 9 years waiting for his day to come like so many of his friends have already and at the same time praying that he will be able to prove his innocence first.

Paul has been protesting the conditions at Polunsky for awhile now and he's not the only one who is speaking out about the way they have to live and how they are treated everyday awaiting there cold and calculated death. I don't understand how you can put someone in a small, confined, enclosed area with very little daylight shining through and no heat or ventilation, whichever is required at the time. How can you keep them in there for 23 hours of the day with no human contact. How can you take their property away from them, and anything else to stimulate there mind in order to keep sane. How can you do that to a human being, someone who has friends and loved ones who are truly and innocently suffering every time we hear about them being run in on, gassed or just downright treated or talked to like an animal and expect him to keep his mind. How do I keep my mind seeing my mother long to hold my brother in her arms since these mothers of death row inmates in Texas, will never feel the touch of their son again.

I just don't understand how we can continue to treat human life this way. It has made me feel proud of my brother and the others who are either speaking out or just giving permission for the others to use their name and complaints. They must protest for the same that we protest for. To stop the killings and to improve the conditions and treatment of our loved ones on death row. I just get scared sometimes that through the protesting inside that someone will be seriously hurt or killed. It shouldn't have to go that far. I know in my heart that the ones who are complaining and protesting, would also work together with the right people to come to an agreement; if the rules can just be followed but not just by the inmates. By the administration and the ones who can legally change the conditions for these guys. The ones in charge on death row should be setting an example and following the rules too.

In sadness with a lot of others,

Theresa Rosillo (Paul Colellas Sister)
